Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, David Bowie Top Pop Moments Poll

Please follow TMW on Twitter and Facebook.

Veteran stars including The Rolling Stones and David Bowie have proved they are still top of the pops by leading a poll of the biggest music moments of 2013.

The Brown Sugar hitmakers’ headlining set at Britain’s iconic Glastonbury festival in June — their first ever appearance at the event — came first in the U.K. survey.

The death of Lou Reed in October was voted second, and Bowie’s surprise release of a new album in March has come third. The top five was rounded out by British pop stars McFly and Busted forming supergroup McBusted, and Adele scooping an Academy Award for her Skyfall theme.

Miley Cyrus’ headline-grabbing twerking antics at the MTV Video Music Awards in August just scraped into the top 10 at number seven, and British boyband JLS’ split announcement only managed ninth place in the survey for free music streaming service Blinkboxmusic.com.

Hit boyband One Direction only managed one entry – their movie One Direction: This Is Us came in at a lowly number 20.

Blinkbox boss Rowan Adams says, “Whilst most Brits think it hasn’t been a golden year for pop, the same can’t be said for seasoned pros the Rolling Stones, who claim the biggest music moment of 2013. The question is, will we be talking about One Direction’s Glastonbury show in 50 years’ time?”

Katy Perry’s PRISM Debuts at #1

(pr)—PRISM, Katy Perry’s new studio album, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. According to Nielsen SoundScan, 286,344 units were sold in the US in the album’s first week of release – giving the global pop superstar the best sales week of her career and reflecting a nearly 50% increase over first week sales of 2010’sTeenage Dream, which debuted at No. 1 in eight countries and spent more than two years on the Billboard 200. The strong showing also marked 2013’s largest US sales week for a female artist. PRISM is the first No. 1 album for the Capitol Music Group since Chris Tomlin’s Burning Lights topped the chart in January and the first No. 1 album for the Capitol label since August, 2012.

The album is a global smash as well, shooting to No. 1 on iTunes in 90 markets around the world. Lead single “Roar” has already sold more than five million singles worldwide. It’s certified 6X Platinum in Australia (where it’s topped the chart for nine consecutive weeks), 4X Platinum in Canada (where it has become the biggest-selling single in chart history and has been the No. 1 airplay record on three formats for five weeks running) and 2X Platinum in New Zealand (where it’s been No. 1 for 11 consecutive weeks). “Roar” has gone Platinum in the UK, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Ireland and Sweden and is certified Gold in 10 countries.

“Perry has never sounded better,” said People. “This is a pop blockbuster that easily beats 2010’s hit-laden behemoth Teenage Dream.” “She’s making the mainstream not just swimming in it,” noted Entertainment Weekly while Idolator hailed the album as a “transcendental pop experience.” “Prism strikes a newly sophisticated balance between accessibility and idiosyncrasy,” observed the Los Angeles Times and The New York Timessaid, “Katy Perry is the most potent pop star of the day.”

Following the success of “Roar,” PRISM’s second single, “Unconditionally” is undeniably Katy’s next hit. Over 200 Pop, Rhythm and HOT AC stations have already added it and the song is already in the Top 20 most played at Pop in its first week- it’s no doubt that the song’s rapid rise is the making of yet another smash album.

Katy celebrated the release of PRISM with a series of special events:

– The Katy Perry iHeartRadio Album Release Party was the inaugural event at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s new iHeartRadio Theater Los Angeles. The October 22 event featured a live performance and Q&A with Katy, hosted by on-air talent/TV personality Mario Lopez. It aired live on 175 Clear Channel Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR), Rhythmic CHR, Adult Contemporary (AC) and Hot AC stations around the country and exclusively online at Yahoo Screen. The party was televised on The CW Network later that week. Katy also took over all Clear Channel CHR radio stations nationwide and on iHeartRadio as guest DJ, as CCM+E branded its stations “Katy Perry Radio” for the entire day.

– Citi and CBS Radio presented Katy Perry’s WE CAN SURVIVE on October 23 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Ellie Goulding, Sara Bareilles, Tegan & Sara, Kacey Musgraves and Bonnie McKee joined Katy in the sold-out show with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Young Survival Coalition, the premier global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

– On October 25, Katy’s performance at Colorado’s Lakewood High School aired live on “Good Morning America.” Lakewood was one of nearly 1,000 high schools that submitted lip dub videos of “Roar” to the “Good Morning America’s ‘Roar’ With Katy Perry Contest.” View Katy’s performance and the winning clip here.

Katy co-wrote each track on PRISM, with various producers including Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Klas Ahlund, and Greg Wells. PRISM also features collaborations with Bloodshy (“Love Me”), Greg Kurstin and Sia (“Double Rainbow”), as well as a return to the studio with “Firework” producers Stargate (“This Moment”).

Elton John Slammed As "The Devil’s Work" By Russian Islamic Leader

Elton John, who is prepping a run of shows in Russia, has already been met with resistance by a parent’s group opposing his presence as homosexual propaganda; now, a Russian Islamic leader has called the Rocket Man’s oeuvre the “devil’s work.”

According to Billboard, Seidzhagfar Lutfullin told local press that Elton is “the devil’s work in the shape of a pederast,” adding that “Sodomy . . . is what the world famous homosexual Elton John, who recently wed a man in public, is promoting.”

Elton has previously has said that he’ll go ahead with the concerts—consequences be damned. He faces 15 days in prison and a $150 fine for breaking the country’s anti-gay laws.

Elton’s Moscow shows are scheduled for December 7 at Crocus City Hall and Dec. 9 in Kazan.

Cher Earns Highest-Charting Solo Album Ever on Billboard 200

“Believe” it: Cher has earned her highest-charting solo album ever on the Billboard 200.

The diva’s new studio album, “Closer to the Truth,” also logs her highest debut ever (solo or otherwise) with its arrival at No. 3. It sold 63,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Warner Bros. Records effort is her first album since 2002’s “Living Proof.”

Until this week, Cher had never gone higher than No. 4 with her solo albums — reaching that peak with both “Believe” in 1999 and “The Very Best of Cher” in 2003. As half of Sonny & Cher, she only went higher once — with 1965’s No. 2-peaking “Look at Us.” The album — which contained the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single “I Got You Babe” — was stuck in the runner-up slot for eight weeks behind the Beatles’ “Help!”

During the new album’s release week, Cher played NBC’s “Today” show (Sept. 23) and “The Late Show With David Letterman” (Sept. 24). On the latter program, she was the only guest for the evening and also performed the album’s second single, “I Hope You Find It.”

“Closer to the Truth” was led by the single “Woman’s World,” which becameCher’s eighth No. 1 on the Dance Club/Play Songs chart in August.

Katy Perry Planning To Ditch Pop Music

Katy Perry is planning to ditch pop music and fill her next album with acoustic guitar music.

The I Kissed a Girl hitmaker is preparing to release her latest record, Prism, next month, but she is already looking to the future and is planning to adopt a totally different sound for the follow-up.

Perry, 28, insists she now wants to model herself on legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell as she moves forward with her career.

She tells Billboard.com, “I’ll probably turn into more of a Joni Mitchell. As I inch towards my 30’s, I think my fourth record will be more of an acoustic guitar album. That’s where I started when I was first discovered by Glen Ballard and got my first record deal. We’ll see – I can’t get ahead of myself. I’m still doing the work: I’m a good balance of left and right brain, and to be an artist with a long career, you’ve got to have both… I’ve got a few records under my belt, and I still feel like a brand-new artist. People still want that truth to cut through.”

Prism is Perry’s third album under her current recording moniker, but she released another under her real name Katy Hudson back in 2001.

On The Cover: The Katy Perry Billboard Interview

Katy Perry  talked to Billboard about how her split from Russell Brand influenced some of the songs on her new album,  Prism, such as the not-yet-released tune “Ghost,” in which she sings, “You sent a text, it’s like the wind changed your mind,” in reference to her ex-husband  informing her via text message that he was divorcing her.

And the song “By the Grace of God,” Perry added, “is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, ‘Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?’

“All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically,” she says. “I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs.”

For the record in case you didn’t know Katy Perry  became the first woman, and second artist overall following Michael Jackson, in the 55-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 to have five songs from the same album at No. 1. Meanwhile, Perry does one up  better.  With the rapid ascent of “Roar” — the instantly ubiquitous first single from the upcoming “PRISM,” due Oct. 22 — the pop superstar  has tied Rihanna for the most No. 1s on the Pop Songs tally with her ninth chart-topper. At this point, industry insiders suggest Prism will equal Teenage Dream in  multi-platinum super success.
