Billy Joel And Elton John End Feud at Songwriters Hall of Fame Celebration

Billy Joel and Sir Elton John ended their feud at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony in New York City on Thursday night after Joel told the ‘Rocket Man’ to call him just after he introduced inductees Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner.

The former pals and touring partners fell out in 2011 when the Brit publicly accused Joel of not taking rehab seriously as he attempted to battle alcoholism in a blunt magazine interview, during which he also suggested the New Yorker was lazy.

The I’m Still Standing rocker told Rolling Stone, “He’s going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they’ve been light. When I went to rehab, I had to clean the floors. He goes to rehab where they have TVs. I love you, Billy, and this is tough love.”

He added, “At the end of the day, he’s coasting. I always say, ‘Billy, can’t you write another song?’ It’s either fear or laziness. It upsets me.”

Joel was clearly saddened by Elton’s comments and publicly reprimanded him, but revisiting the feud in a New York Times Magazine article, which was published last month (May13), it appeared the My Life hitmaker had mellowed, stating, “He (Elton) tends to shoot off his mouth – he shoots from the hip. I think his heart is in the right place. Maybe he’s trying to motivate me, to get me mad or something. He’s kind of like a mom.”

Joel also recently stated he would be interested in performing with his fellow rock pianist again.

Elton, who was honored with the Johnny Mercer Award at the music gala, offered to officially end the pair’s stand-off at the Songwriters Hall of Fame event when he took the stage and said, “I didn’t see you tonight Mr. Joel, but I want to see you.”

And his gamble paid off – Joel later took to the microphone and asked, “Is Elton still here by the way?” before adding, “Anyway, we’re OK. Call me. It’s the same phone number.”

As well as Elton and his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and singer-songwriter J.D. Souther were saluted at Marriott Marquis Hotel gala, while Motown founder Berry Gordy was handed the Pioneer Award.

Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Aerosmith, Sting, More Honored at 2013 Inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame

Sting performed in honor of Elton John, Billy Joel sang snippets of Foreigner’s hits when introducing the band and Smokey Robinson debuted part of a new song he wrote about Berry Gordy.

The 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony was full of star power that included Alison Krauss, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Nickelback, Petula Clark, Wiz Khalifa, Jordin Sparks and a video message from Bill Clinton.

Tyler, Perry, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Holly Knight, JD Souther and Tony Hatch were inducted Thursday into the Songwriters Hall 2013 class in New York City.

John and writing partner Bernie Taupin received the Johnny Mercer award, and Sting kicked off the night with a performance of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.” Sting also called John and Taupin “my two heroes.”

John, who was inducted into the Songwriters Hall in 1992, said songwriting is often taken for granted.

“I don’t mean this lightly, but when you get an Ivor Novello award or an American songwriter’s award, it means so much more than a Grammy because this is where the whole process starts,” he said.

John also used the stage to try to clear his differences with Joel.

“I didn’t see you tonight Mr. Joel, but I want to see you,” he said.

Joel responded later when he was onstage with light jokes.

“Is Elton still here by the way?” he asked. “Anyway, we’re OK. Call me. It’s the same phone number.”

Billy Joel Auctioning Autographed Piano For Music Students

Veteran singer Billy Joel is auctioning a personalized baby grand piano — expected to raise more than $50,000 — to donate to aspiring music students.

The Uptown Girl hitmaker has decided to sell off a Steinway & Sons piano to benefit Ten O’Clock Classics, a non-profit organisation which provides music lessons and instruments for school children.

Joel will sign and personalize the keyboard’s protective covering for the winning bidder once the Charity Buzz auction closes on April 2.

Bidding is expected to raise $60,000, and all proceeds from the sale will be donated to Ten O’Clock Classics as well as the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Elton John Wants To Reconcile With Billy Joel

Elton John is still holding out hope he can reconcile with former pal Billy Joel, after candid comments about thePiano Man’s drinking problems led to months of estrangement.

The Tiny Dancer hit-maker battled drug and alcohol problems early on in his career and only managed to kick his habits in the 1980s after attending a strict treatment program in Illinois, and he called on his friend and former touring partner to follow his lead during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine last year.

The music legend called on Joel to get serious about overcoming his alcohol demons in the article and upset Joel with his remarks. Over a year has passed since the interview was published and now Elton admits his words have had devastating effects – the two no longer speak.

During an appearance on The Today Show on Wednesday, he said, “He was angry about that, he wrote me a thing (note that said), ‘You shouldn’t judge people. Who are you to judge?’ And I said it because I thought it might get through. And I can understand him being angry about it and we haven’t really communicated since.”

The icon also apologized for causing him pain.

He added, “Billy Joel is the kindest, sweetest man and the most talented songwriter and a great, great artist. If he called me tomorrow and said, ‘Let’s have lunch,’ I’d go lie down in shock because I adore him. I only said it as tough love but he was upset and I’m sorry I upset him.”

Billy Joel Congratulates Alexa Ray With Flowers

Rocker Billy Joel surprised his singer daughter Alexa Ray with a big bouquet of flowers on Monday night (Dec 20) to congratulate her on her residency at a New York hotel.

Singer/songwriter Alexa Ray Joel kicked off a set of intimate shows at The Plaza Hotel’s posh Oak Room this week and her model mother, Christie Brinkley, was among the audience members cheering her on.
Rumours suggested her rock star father would make an appearance as a special guest at the gig, but he was a notable absentee as Alexa performed tracks from her album Sketches.
However, the Piano Man, who is recovering from recent double hip replacement surgery, made sure to show his support with a bunch of blooms – and he has vowed to attend another concert once he’s fully back on his feet.
His representative tells the New York Post’s Page Six column, “(He) plans to attend another upcoming show. He did send a gorgeous opening-night bouquet with loving well wishes, and her mum, grandmother, brother and sister were all in attendance.”

Billy Joel To Get The ‘Glee’ Treatment

Billy Joel has given the producers of Gleepermission to pick through his catalog for an upcoming episode of the show dedicated to the music of the Piano Man.

The rocker reveals he has signed-off on a plan to turn his life’s work into a Gleespecial – and he can’t wait to see whatdirector Ryan Murphy and his cast make of songs like Uptown Girl and New York State of Mind.

He tells Access Hollywood, “I said, ‘Yeah, go ahead, use my stuff.’

“I was in the chorus when I was in high school.”

But Joel insists he won’t be following Britney Spears and making an appearance on the show: “I’m not a big TV actor type of guy. I’m a piano player.”

Glee has already tackled Joel – show star Matthew Morrison and Emmy Award-winning special guest Neil Patrick Harris crooned a duet of the singer/songwriter’sPiano Man in an episode last season.
