Sir Elton John has landed a special BRIT Award in recognition of his lengthy career.
The Rocket Man hitmaker has been unveiled as the first-ever recipient of the Brits Icon Award, which will honor artists who have had a “lasting impact on the nation’s culture”.
The accolade stands alone from the prestigious U.K. prizegiving, which traditionally takes place in February, and Sir Elton will be handed the trophy at a show in London in September.
He says, “It’s a tremendous honor and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I’m really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion.”
The star cancelled a string of shows earlier this month after he was diagnosed with appendicitis, but hopes to be back onstage for events in September.
