Daniel Radcliffe: ‘Harry Potter Deserved Oscar Recognition’

Daniel Radcliffe is upset the Harry Potter franchise has been largely overlooked by the Academy Awards, blaming Hollywood “snobbery” for the snub.

The final installment of the hit series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, is in the running for art direction, make-up and visual effects prizes at the upcoming 2012 ceremony.

But Radcliffe, who played the boy wizard in eight films, admits it’s “disheartening” to miss out on a chance at Oscars gold in the major categories.

He tells Britain’s Radio Times, “It’s kind of disheartening. I never thought I’d care. But it would’ve been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in. I don’t think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids’ films, unless they’re directed by Martin Scorsese.

“I was watching Hugo the other day and was going, ‘Why is this nominated and we’re not?’ I was slightly miffed. There’s a certain amount of snobbery.”

But the actor concedes, “How much of a pat on the back do we really need? We get paid stupid amounts of money.”

Daniel Radcliffe Admits Alcohol Addiction

In the new issue of GQ magazine, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe reveals he stopped drinking last August after realizing he became reliant on alcohol “to enjoy stuff.”

“There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me,” Radcliffe, 21, admits.

“As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn’t work for me,” he explains. “I’d just rather sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh.”

“There’s no shame in enjoying a quiet life. And that’s been the realization of the past few years for me,” Radcliffe tells GQ.

“I’m actually enjoying the fact that I can have a relationship with my girlfriend [Olive Uniacke] where I’m really pleasant and not f—— up totally all the time,” he adds.

Radcliffe can be seen next alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the final installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
