Cyndi Lauper teamed up with Jackson Browne for an emotional rendition of hit songA Day In The Life to honour John Lennon at a tribute concert on Friday night (Nov 12).
The pair was among the stars who turned out to remember the Beatles legend at the one-off charity show in New York, to mark Lennon’s 70th birthday last month (Oct 10).
Lauper, who also performed Across The Universe, told the audience at the Beacon Theatre how she and her sister often pretended to be Lennon and his bandmate PaulMcCartney whenever they sang together as youngsters. She then welcomed Browne onstage for the duet.
Other performers at the event included Patti Smith, who sang Strawberry Fields and paid tribute to Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono during the show.
Ono was unable to attend the tribute, but sent a video message telling organisers: “John would have loved what you are doing.” Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Playing for Change Foundation, which promotes peace with music.
A re-issue of the 1999 home video released via Pioneer, this music film has been revived for the DVD market as a reminder of Browne’s lasting legacy. This DVD, part documentary and part live experience, sees him reflecting on his four decade career. Going Home features not only interviews with Browne, but footage of live sets from different decades in his career seamlessly blended into one another. These live moments are a testament to the timeless nature of his music. Guest appearances, in interviews and performances, include Don Henley, David Crosby, Graham Nash, The Eagles, David Lindley, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt.
An accomplished songwriter with seven platinum records to his name, Jackson Browne’s homegrown, heartfelt music has earned him inductions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2004) and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame (2007). He’s penned hit songs not only for himself, but The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez, and others. His honest, personal delivery and moving, breathing songs have laid the foundation for a solid and celebrated career, which is beautifully captured on Going Home.
