Katy Perry has scored her ninth number 1 single at Top 40 and tenth consecutive number 1 single on the Dance/Club Play charts with “Wide Awake,” a track from Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, the special edition of her double-platinum certified album Teenage Dream. Katy ties Rihanna’s record for the most number 1’s in the nearly 20-year history of Billboard’s Nielsen BDS-based Mainstream Top 40 chart. “The achievement is even more impressive given that while the chart launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992, Rihanna didn’t first grace the list until 2005 and Perry didn’t arrive until 2008. Of the acts with the most Mainstream Top 40 number 1s, the top seven are women. After Katy and Rihanna, Lady Gaga, P!nk and Britney Spears each have seven leaders, while Beyoncé and Mariah Carey follow with six apiece,” reports Billboard Magazine.
“Wide Awake” was written for her 3D feature film Katy Perry: Part of Me, which has earned more than $24 million domestically and is approaching $30 million in international box office. With many countries still to open, Part of Me is already the fourth biggest music documentary of all time, outpacing films from Madonna, U2, and The Jonas Brothers.
Katy was also just nominated for 4 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Female for “Part of Me” and Video of the Year for “Wide Awake”.
