Katy Perry’s PRISM Debuts at #1

(pr)—PRISM, Katy Perry’s new studio album, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. According to Nielsen SoundScan, 286,344 units were sold in the US in the album’s first week of release – giving the global pop superstar the best sales week of her career and reflecting a nearly 50% increase over first week sales of 2010’sTeenage Dream, which debuted at No. 1 in eight countries and spent more than two years on the Billboard 200. The strong showing also marked 2013’s largest US sales week for a female artist. PRISM is the first No. 1 album for the Capitol Music Group since Chris Tomlin’s Burning Lights topped the chart in January and the first No. 1 album for the Capitol label since August, 2012.

The album is a global smash as well, shooting to No. 1 on iTunes in 90 markets around the world. Lead single “Roar” has already sold more than five million singles worldwide. It’s certified 6X Platinum in Australia (where it’s topped the chart for nine consecutive weeks), 4X Platinum in Canada (where it has become the biggest-selling single in chart history and has been the No. 1 airplay record on three formats for five weeks running) and 2X Platinum in New Zealand (where it’s been No. 1 for 11 consecutive weeks). “Roar” has gone Platinum in the UK, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Ireland and Sweden and is certified Gold in 10 countries.

“Perry has never sounded better,” said People. “This is a pop blockbuster that easily beats 2010’s hit-laden behemoth Teenage Dream.” “She’s making the mainstream not just swimming in it,” noted Entertainment Weekly while Idolator hailed the album as a “transcendental pop experience.” “Prism strikes a newly sophisticated balance between accessibility and idiosyncrasy,” observed the Los Angeles Times and The New York Timessaid, “Katy Perry is the most potent pop star of the day.”

Following the success of “Roar,” PRISM’s second single, “Unconditionally” is undeniably Katy’s next hit. Over 200 Pop, Rhythm and HOT AC stations have already added it and the song is already in the Top 20 most played at Pop in its first week- it’s no doubt that the song’s rapid rise is the making of yet another smash album.

Katy celebrated the release of PRISM with a series of special events:

– The Katy Perry iHeartRadio Album Release Party was the inaugural event at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s new iHeartRadio Theater Los Angeles. The October 22 event featured a live performance and Q&A with Katy, hosted by on-air talent/TV personality Mario Lopez. It aired live on 175 Clear Channel Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR), Rhythmic CHR, Adult Contemporary (AC) and Hot AC stations around the country and exclusively online at Yahoo Screen. The party was televised on The CW Network later that week. Katy also took over all Clear Channel CHR radio stations nationwide and on iHeartRadio as guest DJ, as CCM+E branded its stations “Katy Perry Radio” for the entire day.

– Citi and CBS Radio presented Katy Perry’s WE CAN SURVIVE on October 23 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Ellie Goulding, Sara Bareilles, Tegan & Sara, Kacey Musgraves and Bonnie McKee joined Katy in the sold-out show with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Young Survival Coalition, the premier global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

– On October 25, Katy’s performance at Colorado’s Lakewood High School aired live on “Good Morning America.” Lakewood was one of nearly 1,000 high schools that submitted lip dub videos of “Roar” to the “Good Morning America’s ‘Roar’ With Katy Perry Contest.” View Katy’s performance and the winning clip here.

Katy co-wrote each track on PRISM, with various producers including Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Klas Ahlund, and Greg Wells. Kate Middleton Makes Secret Trip To St. Mary’s Hospital

As the world awaits the first report of the birth of Britain’s royal heir, a witness says Kate Middleton made a secret visit to St. Mary’s Hospital in London this week. The visit was not because she had gone into labor; the witness says it was simply a checkup to monitor the baby’s progress.

“I was at St. Mary’s with Kate Middleton [and] I was told it was a checkup,” the witness tells

Middleton’s due date was on Thursday. Preparations for the baby’s arrival are already well underway at St. Mary’s. Parking outside the Lindo Wing, where the Duchess of Cambridge will give birth, has been suspended for the entire month of July. Dozens of ladders for photographers have already been stationed outside the hospital in anticipation for the so the newborn’s first appearance as he or she leaves the hospital with Middleton and Prince William. Earlier today, a team of Metropolitan Police officers conducted a thorough security sweep in and around Lindo Wing.

“It’s standard procedure when there is royalty due, and with what’s happening here, we have to take extra precaution,” an officer told People magazine.

Pregnant Jennifer Love Hewitt Announces Engagement

Not only is Jennifer Love Hewitt set to become a mom, but she is also set to become a wife. Just a day after her pregnancy was announced, Hewitt’s rep has confirmed the actress is engaged to marry the father of her baby, actor Brian Hallisay.

“Yes, they are engaged,” the rep tells People magazine.

No other details on the proposal were released. Hewitt announced her pregnancy on Tuesday. “This is a wonderful time and we are looking forward to starting our family together,” she said in a statement.

Hewitt and Hallisay, both 34, have been dating for more than a year. They previously appeared together on NBC’s Love Bites and currently co-star on Lifetime’s The Client List.

Hewitt was previously engaged to Scottish actor Ross McCall. After their split in 2008, Hewitt began dating her Ghost Whisperer co-star Jamie Kennedy. They split in 2010.

Amanda Bynes DUI Lawyer: Reports Are Way Exaggerated, Amanda’s Fine

Amanda Bynes’ DUI lawyer has come to her defense in the wake of her drug related arrest in New York City. Richard Hutton tells People magazine that the 27-year-old is a “fine client.” Hutton represents Bynes in her DUI trouble in Los Angeles, but he is not involved in her NYC case.

“I think [reports] are way exaggerated,” he said. “I think Amanda’s fine. I have no problems with her whatsoever. She’s a fine client.”

Hutton also says that he believes NYC authorities don’t have “much of a case” against the actress. “Even if you believe everything you hear, it’s something that amounts to virtually nothing. And it’s my understanding there’s not much evidence to back that case up. There’s no physical evidence to back it up. I understand there’s no marijuana, no pipe,” he said.

Bynes was arrested last Thursday at her Manhattan apartment after building personnel witnessed her smoking marijuana in the lobby. When police arrived, Bynes allegedly threw a bong out a window in her 36th floor unit. She was taken to Roosevelt Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after her arrest. Bynes was later booked for marijuana possession, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence.

Bynes’s DUI trouble stems from an April 6, 2012 arrest in West Hollywood. She was taken into custody after she crashed into a police car and then refused a breathalyzer test. The next hearing is set for July 18.

Jennifer Aniston has no hard feelings towards ex-husband Brad Pitt for his recent engagement to longtime love Angeline Jolie. Insiders say the actress is “trying to just focus on her own happiness” with boyfriend Justin Theroux.

“Jen moved on a long time ago, and she is trying to just focus on her own happiness,” the source says. “Jen is not a bitter person and she has always wanted Brad to be happy.”

Aniston and Pitt divorced in 2005 after 5 years of marriage. In January 2006, Pitt and Jolie confirmed their romance by announcing they were expecting their first child together. They now have six children together.

Pitt and Jolie announced their engagement on Monday. “It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy. There’s no date set at this time,” Pitt’s manager told People magazine.

George Clooney Arrested In Protest Against Sudanese President

George Clooney was arrested in Washington, D.C. Friday while participating in a protest against Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir. Demonstrators holding signs reading “Stop Bombing Civilians Now!” and “End the silence stop the violence” blocked the entrance to the Sudanese Embassy in protest of al-Bashir blocking humanitarian aid.

Just moments before his arrest Clooney said humanitarian aid is needed in Sudan “before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.”

The actor and numerous other protesters were arrested after ignoring three police orders to disperse. Clooney talked to reporters as his hands were being bound with plastic zip-ties. “I’m just trying to raise attention,” he said. “This is for the government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them and stop starving them. That’s all we ask.”

Among those arrested along with Clooney were his father, journalist Nick Clooney; End Genocide President Tom Andrews; U.S. Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia; NAACP President Ben Jealous; and Martin Luther King III.

A Secret Service spokesman told People magazine Clooney was charged with “disorderly crossing of a police line.” He will be required to pay a $100 fine.

People Magazine & The Mac Wire Pay Tribute To Monkees Star Davy Jones

By Anne M. Raso, MAC WIRE Contributing Editor

The new issue of People is on newsstands now and it rightfully serves up a multipage tribute to Davy Jones, who sadly passed away from a heart attack on February 29th–leave it to a unusual, funny and sweet guy like Davy to pass away on Leap Day. Somewhere in pop star heaven, he’s undoubtedly laughing about that now! We think that if he could pick a day to meet his maker, it most definitely be February 29th–we are sure he would not have wanted to go so soon though, as he enjoyed his family and his horses so much, and had homes in both Beaverton, PA and Hollywood, FL.

Here at The Mac Wire, we’ve had many dealings and almost-dealings with Davy, including the most memorable occasion–we hung out with Davy for over an hour at his BB King’s sound check in early October 2009, and got to know both him and his third wife, Telemundo star and professional dancer Jessica Pacheco, who would sometimes be incorporated into Davy’s show.  We laughed a lot–Davy was very candid and not afraid to parody others in a loving way–and when Jessica admired the multicolor glass ring I was wearing, I gave it to her (although I am sure it was too big). I had tons of them at the time, as they were very trendy and they cost all of $2 each. Jessica admitted to us she was the jealous type and worried that getting involved with Davy meant women would be throwing themselves at him all the time. They probably were, but to the best of our knowledge, he was a one-woman man even back in the Monkees heydey. He also did a Chillerfest in NJ around that same time–it was great that he was always open to doing the fan conventions–and we popped in for a quick hello in between signings.

Back in 1984, we got to hang out with Davy and his then-wife Anita–who did his hair and makeup–on the set of the Uncle Floyd Show in Newark, NH. Their adorable daughter Talia, then 2 1/2, was in tow clamoring at her mom’s feet. I was associate editor of Tiger Beat magazine at the time, and he did not seem amused that I bought him binders of magazines with him on the cover from the Monkees heydey. He looked at them rather sadly and I was disappointed because I thought he would be happy to have them as keepsakes or at least be flattered that they kept a copy of every mag he was on the cover on at the office all these years!

It was also a blast to see Davy in The Monkees reunion when it came through Brighton Beach (near Coney Island) last year. The guys were in top form and the memorabilia including old magazine covers shown on the big screen behind them was a real blast from the past. Much of it seemed rare and never-before-seen. My Mac Wire editor, Mary Anne Cassata, also caught the show the guys did at the Beacon Theater shortly before then, and got to say hi to Peter afterwards. She was pleasantly surprised to seeing the guys doing a meet and greet with fans in the corridors after that performance.

The Mac Wire was approached last year to do an interview with Davy by his manager that never came to pass and then we also tried for one before his show at BB King’s in late February of this year. They said Davy was pressed for time because he had to leave for a show in Oklahoma and was coming from one the night before that was 260 miles away in upstate New York. It was disappointing, but Davy spoke to me from the stage that night when I came down directly in front of him and crouched down for a quick photo. He joked, “I’m calling the police!” I guess he said that because he thought I was a sniper or you are not supposed to use a flash in that particular club. I wish I could remember the middle part of the convo, but it ended with Davy telling me to “put a drink on the keyboardist’s tab.” I said, “I’ll do that” and gave him the thumbs up! The audience laughed as I walked away and the show went on. I am still hoping to find that on YouTube somewhere, hoping that someone filmed that whole show. After the performance, about 75 fans lined up with albums by the backstage curtain at Stage Right…they were shushed away by security within ten minutes as Davy really did have to take off for Oklahoma that day. He was already gone when we stuck our head back there and asked if the club’s publicist Lauren Sachs of Big Machine Media was there so that we could say a quick hello!

Davy Jones’ death really seemed to have touched a cord with not only his millions of fans around the world, but with the pop scene in general. He was voted as the #1 teen idol of all time in many magazine and online polls, and his death seems to have finally made people realize just how important The Monkees were to the music community even though they were a “prefab” band. The one good thing about Davy’s passing is that people will look at The Monkees with new eyes–and we think that they might finally get the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nod. It’s so darn overdue!
