The man Billboard Magazine named “World’s Top Promotion Man,” Pete Bennett, 77, died suddenly of a heart attack Thanksgiving day in Connecticut.

Bennett, born in the Bronx, NY is credited for propelling the careers of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, The Who, Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor and many others.

Described by Paul McCartney as “the promotion man responsible for getting the Beatles on the radio,” Bennett was named Director of Promotion for the Beatles’ Apple Records label in 1968. After the break-up of the group, Bennett guided the promotional efforts to radio for the solo releases by John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and McCartney.

Over the years in interviews when Bennett was asked why his services were in such demand, he would say “I make unknowns into stars and stars into superstars.”

Among his many legendary achievements, Bennett, working side-by-side with Harrison, produced the world’s first global charity event, “The Concert for Bangladesh,” at Madison Square Garden in 1971. The former Beatle requested Bennett to use his clout and relationships to secure some of the biggest rock stars of the time, including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Leon Russell and Billy Preston.

In 1975 when Michael Jackson and his brothers were looking to leave Motown Records, Bennett orchestrated a deal to bring the Jacksons to Epic Records

Well known for his eye for talent, Bennett is recognized as the first music executive to discover Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler, when he was in a Yonkers, NY band called Chain Reaction.

As impactful as Bennett’s accomplishments were in the music industry, his long list of relationships spanned a who’s who of politics, sports, television and movies, including Bob Hope, Muhammad Ali, Richard Nixon, Elvis Presley, Dick Clark, Nat King Cole, John Wayne and Bobby Vinton.

Bennett is survived by his wife of 47 years, Annette, and his two sons, Peter and Joseph, all of Connecticut. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Beatles Painting For Sale

A painting created by The Beatles is set to go up for auction in New York next week.

The Let It Be hitmakers were forced to hole up inside their Toyko, Japan hotel room back in 1966 after they received a number of death threats in the middle of their world tour.

The band’s manager handed them some paint and a large blank canvas in a bid to help stave off their boredom, and during their stay, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr each picked up a brush and exercised their frustration in a creative way.

Now the abstract masterpiece, entitled Images of a Woman, is to be sold off by Weiss Auctions in Oceanside on September 14.

Philip Weiss tells Forbes magazine, “They were bored. Over the course of two nights, working by lamp light in the center of the canvas, each Beatle painted a corner. The lamp got removed, (leaving a circle in the center), where each Beatle signed his work.”

Ringo Starr is World’s Richest Drummer

The Beatles legend Ringo Starr has been named the world’s richest drummer, ahead of Phil Collins and Dave Grohl.

The veteran musician came top in the list compiled by website Celebritynetworth.com with an estimated fortune of $300 million, with Genesis star Collins coming in second with $250 million. Former Nirvana drummer-turned-Foo Fighters frontman Grohl is third with $225 million.

The top five is rounded out by The Eagles rocker Don Henley and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Other drummers to feature in the top 10 include U2 star Larry Mullen and The Rolling Stones’ Charlie Watts.

Catching Up With Ringo And Friends At NYC’s Pop International Galleries!

Photos And Text By Anne M. Raso

I was lucky enough to catch up with Ringo Starr and members of his All-Starr Band at the special VIP party at the Pop International Galleries at 473 West Broadway in Soho, NYC. I was as happy as…and octopus in a garden, LOL! It’s not everyday that you get to meet a Beatle!

(Ringo says: “Happiness is NOT a warm gun!”)

I consider myself blessed to have been able to get a quick question in with the man himself on the red carpet line–even though Ringo was only on it for ten minutes and had bigger fish to fry (like dealing with reporters from CBS-TV, who had also interviewed him at the Pop International Galleries earlier that day). I basically asked him about the beginnings of his artistic endeavors, which he started taking seriously and selling for charity in 2002. But the Ringed One told us that his love of art goes back to his Beatles days: “I used to get bored on the road and I would just start drawing. I am happy that I was later able to put it to good use and help raise money for the Lotus Foundation (a English arts and spirituality charity you can read more about on lotusfoundation.org.uk).”

We shot Ringo and the most famous of his All-Starrs, Todd Rundgren, arriving for the event…and Rundgren spent over a half hour talking to fans on the nearby street corner at Houston and West Broadway (no star attitude there, which was refreshing). Ringo tried to mingle at the party inside Pop International Galleries and stayed for an hour (minus wife Barbara Bach) but it got very crazy. He was only able to stick his head out of the VIP room for about ten minutes and sign some of the bigger pieces gallery customers had purchased. The managers of the gallery kept saying, “Please disperse a little bit so that Ringo can come through the crowd!” It never quite happened, though! (Luckily, I got up to the front of the gallery to shoot the photo you see at the very top of this blog entry!)

The party stayed in a chaotic state (once or twice removed from full-out Beatlemania) and Ringo left after an hour. Thankfully, he did speak via mic about how wonderful the event was and thanked everyone who came. Some of the folks who bought pricier pieces of art got their art customized with a personalized signature (Ringo does not really do autographs these days, as you know) and a couple even got snapshots with the four-ringed, Ludwig-playing legend.

Everyone at the party had to buy a piece of art (starting at $700) to be able to attend the special VIP event. Caesar’s in Atlantic City had a similar event last Saturday night before Ringo’s show there, and we heard through the grapevine that it was a little less crazy! We confess that we took a few of these art pictures in Palladium Room A at Caesar’s during the day last Saturday, where we were left peacefully alone to enjoy Mr. Starkey’s art!

You can see from the above prints and lithographs by our man that he is inspired by Warhol, Lichtenstein, Picasso’s Cubism period and even the more famous Pucci prints of the 60s (we think his wife Barbara must be a big Pucci fan–have a look at the work immediately above)!

Not surprisingly, a lot of Ringo’s art features a five-point star motif and some feature a little caricature of him by the signature on the bottom right. We hear more fun events like this one are coming up across the country as Ringo And His All-Starr Band do their summer tour! If you are interested in more info, be sure to visit ringostarrart.com. You can also follow Ringo on Twitter via his “handle,” which is simply @ringostarrmusic. He talks about these “art gatherings” now and again. We think it’s the best way for anyone to have the opportunity to party with a Beatle and help do some good charity work at the same time!

Ringo Starr’s Birthplace Saved

Plans to destroy Ringo Starr‘s birthplace have been axed following a “tide” of public outrage.

Officials in the Beatles legend’s hometown of Liverpool, England were keen to demolish the property at 9 Madryn Street, where Starr grew up, as part of a regeneration plan for the region.

Opponents argued it was wrong to destroy a historic landmark, and, after assessing the proposal for more than a year, officials have ruled several sites in the area should be preserved, including Starr’s former home.

The British government’s housing minister Grant Shapps described the property as a “beacon of Beatlemania” and revealed a “tide of community support” saved it from demolition.

He told the BBC, “(It’s) a real example of communities having the power and voice to step in and save the places they treasure most.”

The home at 9 Madryn Street will now be refurbished and put up for sale.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr Reunite at Wedding

Former Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Star came together over the weekend in England as George Harrison’s son Dhani secretly wed his model girlfriend Solveig Karadottir.

The two music legends joined actors Tom Hanks and Clive Owen at the top secret nuptials, which were held at the Harrisons’ Friar Park family home in Henley.

McCartney’s fashion designer daughter Stella reportedly created Karadottir’s wedding dress.

The rocker and the model-turned-psychologist got engaged in January.

The newlyweds will start married life in Los Angeles.
