Elton John Knew Michael Jackson’s Concerts Would Kill Him

Sir Elton John said he knew pop superstar Michael Jackson was doomed as soon as he announced the mammoth run of concerts he was supposed to perform in London four years ago.

The pop superstar died of an anaesthetic overdose in 2009, just weeks before he was about to start a run of 50 sell-out shows in the British capital.

The Rocket Man hitmaker admits he was stunned when Jackson announced the gigs, and he is convinced the gruelling run would have killed the superstar if he had ever taken to the stage.

He tells Britain’s Event magazine, “The day I heard Michael was doing that, I said, ‘That is never going to happen’. I knew he couldn’t do it. He was a basket case. I was put out for my appendix operation with Demerol (surgical anaesthetic), and that was what Michael was taking every day – and he’d been taking it for years.

“The whole thing was just utterly tragic and the idea that he went through with the tour announcement and those rehearsals… Even on a purely physical level it would have killed him.”

Jackson’s doctor Conrad Murray is currently behind bars after he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter relating to the King of Pop’s death.

Elton John Speaks About Past Drug Use

Sir Elton John regrets using drugs during his career as he “wasted such a big part” of his life.

The Rocket Man was addicted to alcohol and cocaine and in 1975 he suffered an overdose, but he managed to turn his back on drugs in the 1990’s.

Now, Sir Elton admits he wishes he had cleaned up his act sooner so he could have reveled in his early success.

In an interview with Matt Lauer, he says, “I wasted such a big part of my life. I was a drug addict and self-absorbed. You know, I was having people die right, left, and center around me, friends.

“And yet I didn’t stop the life that I had, which is the terrible thing about addiction. It’s that – you know, it’s that bad of a disease.”

The full interview is set to air on Today next week.

Elton John Recovering After Hospital

Elton Johns representative has assured fans the rocker is doing well as he recovers from a serious respiratory infection.

The Rocket Man was diagnosed with the illness following his hospitalization in Los Angeles in the early hours of Wednesday, and he was forced to scrap the remainder of this week’s shows in Las Vegas to allow him time to rest.

In a statement, Sir Elton said, “All I can say to the fans is sorry I can’t be with you. I hope to see you soon at this wonderful theater at Caesars Palace.”

But the singer is already making a good recovery and a spokesperson for the star tells ETonline.com he is “at home and doing well” following treatment.

Sir Elton Has Orchid Named After Him

Sir Elton John has had a flower named after him at an Orchid Conference in Singapore.

The Rocket Man hitmaker, who is an avid flower lover, flew out to the country to be honoured with the Doritaenopsis Sir Elton John at the 20th World Orchid Conference.

Sir Elton follows in the footsteps of his late pal Diana, Princess of Wales, actor Jackie Chan and former South African leader Nelson Mandela, who have all had blooms named after them at the event.

The singer stopped by the Sands Expo and Convention Center last week (Nov 13) with his partner David Furnish and their son Zachary, and was presented with the phalaenopsis hybrid orchid ahead of his concert in the country.

And he’s delighted with the flower, which has large white petals with a magenta pattern and golden lip.

He says, “We’ve had orchids in our home all the time, so it’ll be great to grow our own, so we’re going to do that. I have had a lupine named after me and even a rose but never an orchid and this is a great honour as I am an avid lover of gardens.

“Thank you for your kindness for this as it is an eloquent list of people I seem to have joined and this is indeed the most beautiful specimen of orchid.”
