TV: Rosie O’Donnell to Guest Star on ABC Family’s Hit Series "The Fosters"

(press)— Rosie O’Donnell has signed on for a recurring role on ABC Family’s hit drama series, “The Fosters.”

O’Donnell will play Rita Hendricks, a tough yet compassionate woman who works in the foster care system and becomes a mentor to a member of the Foster family. She will appear in three episodes when the series returns in January 2014. Production on the second half of the show’s first season will begin in October.

O’Donnell said, “I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful, heartwarming show. My kids and I never miss it.”

“When Rosie O’Donnell tweeted that she loved ‘The Fosters,’ we knew we had to reach out and try to snap her up! Having witnessed her support of foster children and blended families, we knew she would be a perfect fit for the show,” said the show’s creators and Executive Producers Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg.

“The Fosters” is a compelling, one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms. Stef Foster, a dedicated police officer, and her partner Lena Adams Foster, a school Vice Principal, have built a close-knit, loving family with Stef’s biological son from a previous marriage, Brandon, and their adopted twins Mariana and Jesus. Their lives are disrupted in unexpected ways when Lena meets Callie, a guarded teen with an abusive past who has spent her life in and out of foster homes. Lena and Stef warily welcome Callie and her younger brother Jude into their home hoping to provide them with the guidance and nurturing they so desperately need.

Rosie O’Donnell Welcomes Fifth Child

Rosie O’Donnell is now a mom of 5. The comedian and her wife Michelle Rounds recently welcomed their first child together. The couple named their baby girl Dakota. No other details on Dakota’s birth were available. O’Donnell announced the news Wednesday on Instagram with a picture of herself and Rounds holding Dakota.

“We are thrilled to announce the arrival of our daughter Dakota,” O’Donnell wrote. “With love and thanks — AMEN.”

Dakota joins O’Donnell’s four children with ex-wife Kelli Carpenter.

O’Donnell, 50, and Rounds quietly wed in a secret ceremony last June. Shortly after the wedding, the couple suffered separate health scares – Rounds was diagnosis with desmoids tumors and O’Donnell suffered a heart attack.

Rosie O’Donnell Suffers Heart Attack

Comedienne Rosie O’Donnell is recovering from a heart attack last week.

The actress, 50, has opened up about her health scare last Tuesday on her Rosie.com blog, revealing she refused to believe she was going into cardiac arrest and simply took some aspirin to relieve her pain after hearing the advice in a TV commercial.

Writing in verse form, she states, “i became nauseous/my skin was clammy/i was very very hot/i threw up. Maybe this is a heart attack/i googled womens (sic) heart attack symptoms/i had many of them/but really? – i thought – naaaa”.

O’Donnell chose not to call for an ambulance and instead opted to see her cardiologist the following day (15Aug12). She was sent to the hospital to have a stent put in and the star admits, “i am lucky to be here.”

Her representative Cindi Berger claims O’Donnell is now recovering from the incident in Los Angeles, telling People.com, “She is now home and resting comfortably. She is very, very lucky.”

It’s been a trying month for the comedienne – she recently revealed her fiancee Michelle Rounds had been diagnosed with rare cancer-like desmoid tumours and had undergone surgery in June.

Celebrity Charities Struggle To Keep Admin Costs Low

These days, it seems every celebrity has a charity.

Whether it’s born out of the goodness of their hearts, or a need for image rehabilitation, it seems there’s not a star in Hollywood who can walk a red carpet without mentioning his or her own, personal charitable foundation.

It seems easy, right? People give money and it’s then disbursed to those in need. But running a charity can be a lot more convoluted and confusing than a celebrity bargained for.

Last year, Kanye West shuttered the Kanye West Foundation after it was revealed that while he brought in over $570,000 in 2010, all of the money went to paying “administrative fees,” and none of it was disbursed to the needy.

Wyclef Jean was humiliated when it was discovered that, instead of helping the people of Haiti, his fund Yele Haiti, had squandered millions. Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, Oprah Winfrey and Michael Bolton have also been slammed in the past for their charities’ performance.

Nonprofit watchdog group Charity Navigator suggests no more than 15 percent of a charity’s cash flow should go toward administration or overhead. If a charity has 30 percent or more of its funds going toward administrative fees or overhead, they say a charity has trouble.

The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance gives a slightly wider birth for administrative fees, recommending charities spend at least 65 percent of their total expenses on program activities.
