Shakira Gives Birth To Son Milan

Shakira is officially a mom! The Colombian singer gave birth to a healthy baby boy Tuesday night in Spain. Shakira and her boyfriend, FC Barcelona player Gerard Pique, named their son Milan Piqué Mebarak.

“We are happy to announce the birth of Milan Piqué Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Piqué, born Jan. 22nd at 9:36 p.m. in Barcelona, Spain,” read a statement posted on Shakira’s official website. “The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification. Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth.”

Shakira asked fans for their prayers Tuesday night as she made her way to the hospital for delivery. “I’d like to ask you all to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life,” she Tweeted.

The 35-year-old announced her pregnancy in September just days after being confirmed as a coach for season 4 of The Voice.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Shakira Visits School in Jerusalem

Global education advocate and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Shakira visited the Max Payne “Hand in Hand” School for Bilingual Education in Jerusalem today, meeting with students to talk about the power of education.

She met with Jewish and Palestinian students who study together at the school, which uses bilingual education as a tool to help build peace, coexistence and equality.   She toured the groundbreaking project, where every class is taught by two teachers (one Jewish, one Palestinian) and in two languages (Arabic and Hebrew).

Shakira said: “My visit to Max Rayne school today here in Jerusalem – an inspirational school where students learn together, across all divides, speaking both Arabic and Hebrew, learning and playing together without difference– only reminded me, once again, that the most crucial decisions we can make for a better tomorrow concern how to raise and educate our children.”

Later today, Shakira will address the Israeli Presidential Conference, meeting with world leaders and journalists, economists, scientists and innovators to discuss the need for a free, quality education for all children, especially girls.

I’m convinced, as many people are, that investing in education is the best strategy for peace and global stability, and the earlier, the better,” said Shakira.  “Early investment, early childhood nutrition, and basic health care from birth through the age of 6 are essential for a child to develop the actual physical means to learn: to perform better in class, but also better throughout life.

The goodwill visit to Israel is part of Shakira’s ongoing work as an advocate for global education, calling for the expansion and improvement of comprehensive early childhood care and education, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

Shakira’s New Album Comes out Oct. 19th worldwide!

Shakira’s (Epic Records) global hit “Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)” has become the best-selling World Cup song in history. “Waka Waka” will be available on her forthcoming album Sale el Sol/The Sun Comes Out, scheduled to be released on October 19th. After selling an astounding two million singles, “Waka Waka” is the biggest World Cup song ever released, however its success goes far beyond its popularity as a song, the song and accompanying dance has become a cultural and viral phenomenon.

The official video for “Waka Waka” has seen over 170 million YouTube hits making it the #4 most watched video of all time and the #3 most watched music video. Including unofficial “Waka Waka” videos, the total cumulative views are over 350 million. The track was also the soundtrack to Shakira’s hugely successful 1Goal campaign in which Shakira devised the now-famed “Waka Waka” dance and tasked her fans around the world to “dance for 1Goal” and upload their “Waka Dance” videos to spread the word for education. Fans in overwhelming numbers made videos and uploaded them to YouTube with flash-mobs popping up across the world – together gathering more than 400 million views and helping to promote 1Goal’s campaign for universal education. Check out some of the “Waka Waka” dance highlights:
On the heels of the momentous success of “Waka Waka,” Shakira is set to release her new single “Loca” in Spanish and English featuring UK phenomenon Dizzee Rascal and Dominican hip-hop artist El Cata (on the English and Spanish respectively). Recorded in the Dominican Republic, Shakira brings her signature fusion of musical identities to this production of “Loca” by blending the horn-heavy elements of meringue with a synthesis of techno percussions laid out to a dance back beat. “Loca” is Shakira’s interpretation of El Cata’s song “Loca Con Su Tiguere.”
For the “Loca” video, Shakira took to the streets of Barcelona, with Dizzee Rascal and a handheld camera, as the backdrop for “Loca.” In an attempt to capture the true interpretation of the song, Shakira opted to go away from the traditional big production music video to portray a spirited, fun-filled day being ‘loca’ in the streets with the people of Barcelona.
“Barcelona is one of my favorite cities and has become a second home to me,” said Shakira. “The video is just about having fun and being real in this amazing place with real people.”
