Sir Elton John has landed a special BRIT Award in recognition of his lengthy career.
The Rocket Man hitmaker has been unveiled as the first-ever recipient of the Brits Icon Award, which will honor artists who have had a “lasting impact on the nation’s culture”.
The accolade stands alone from the prestigious U.K. prizegiving, which traditionally takes place in February, and Sir Elton will be handed the trophy at a show in London in September.
He says, “It’s a tremendous honor and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I’m really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion.”
The star cancelled a string of shows earlier this month after he was diagnosed with appendicitis, but hopes to be back onstage for events in September.

Bruce Springsteen was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year as stars including Sir Elton John, Katy Perry and Sting paid tribute to “The Boss” before Sunday’s Grammy Awards.
The rocker was the toast of the event in Los Angeles, where top acts including Mumford & Sons, Patti Smith, Jackson Browne and Alabama Shakes took the stage to cover Springsteen’s greatest hits.
Sir Elton sang a rendition of his track Streets of Philadelphia, while John Legend put a jazz spin on Dancing In The Dark on the piano, and Tim McGraw belted outTougher than the Rest with Faith Hill singing harmony.
Funnyman Jon Stewart, the evening’s host, credited Springsteen with giving a good name to their home state of New Jersey.
He joked, “We don’t have much. We are known mostly as the chief exporter in this country of carcinogens. Bruce Springsteen is all we have.”
The dinner also featured an auction, which Springsteen contributed to by offering a signed Telecaster guitar – and he got into the giving spirit by adding a few bonuses to the package.
He told the crowd, “With this guitar comes one free guitar lesson from me. That’s right. One free lesson. One hour. And a ride in the sidecar of my Harley Davidson. So dig in!”
The instrument sold to an unidentified woman for $250,000, reports the New York Times.
MusiCares provides financial aid and medical care to musicians who have fallen on hard times.
Sir Elton John has lashed out at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame officials for failing to induct Donna Summer earlier this year (12), branding the snub a “total disgrace”.
The I Feel Love hitmaker was shortlisted for the honour as part of the class of 2012, but she was overlooked in favour of artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Beastie Boys and Guns N’ Roses – and the Rocket Man is angry his good friend Summer, who died on Thursday (17May12), was left out.
Paying tribute to the late star in a statement to Eonline.com, Elton says, “I’m so sad. This woman was the queen of disco and so much more. Her records sound as good today as they ever did.
“That she has never been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace, especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted. She is a great friend to me and to the Elton John Aids Foundation and I will miss her greatly.”
Meanwhile, a slew of other celebrities have added their Twitter.com tributes to Summer.
Barbra Streisand, who collaborated with the disco diva on their hit 1979 duet No More Tears (Enough Is Enough), writes, “I was shocked to hear about Donna. She was so vital the last time I saw her a few months ago. I loved doing the duet with her. She had an amazing voice and was so talented… It’s so sad.”
Lady Gaga is in the running for an Oscar after she was named among the nominees for the Best Song prize.
The pop superstar’s duet with Sir Elton John, Hello Hello, from Gnomeo & Juliet, has been included in a long list of 39 songs in competition for gold at the 2012 Academy Awards.

Mary J. Blige’s track Living Proof, from The Help, is also on the list, along with will.i.am’s Hot Wings, from Rio, and Robbie Williams and Brad Paisley’s duet Collision of Worlds, from Cars2.
Other artists in consideration for the prize include Chris Cornell (The Keeper, from Machine Gun Preacher), actress/singer Zooey Deschanel (So Long, from Winnie the Pooh) and Elvis Costello (Sparkling Day, from One Day).
The list will be whittled down to five main contenders and the final nominees will be announced on January 24th.
Sir Elton John and Billie Jean King have announced they will be hosting an AIDS benefit tennis event in Cleveland.
The World Tennis Smash Hits event will feature both professional and recreational players, with Andy Roddick, Martina Navratilova andAmelie Mauresmo slated to join other top players (who will be announced in the coming weeks) at the showcase, which will be held at the Cleveland Public Hall on Tuesday, October 27. The event will benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation and various local AIDS charities, which Smash Hits has supported since 1993.
Said Sir Elton John, “I urge all of the tennis fans and concerned citizens in the Greater Cleveland area to support this event and bring their families for a wonderful evening of tennis for a great cause.”
King noted, “It is great for Elton and I to return to Cleveland and we are looking forward to a night of competitive and entertaining tennis.”
She added, “We hope the Greater Cleveland area will help us reach those goals and support Smash Hits.”
Glee hunk Matthew Morrison introduced his new girlfriend to a star-studded crowd last week (ends24Jun11) by showing her off at Sir Elton John‘s annual White Tie and Tiara Ball.
The TV star has been linked to a series of beauties, including British model/actress Kelly Brook, but he only had eyes for one woman at the Rocket Man’s lavish fundraising party last Thursday (23Jun11) when he took along his new love, model Renee Puente.
A source tells JustJared.com, “They looked really cute together. Matt held Renee’s hand during the event and in the car as they were leaving.”
And the party was an impressive one to take the lucky lady to – George Michael provided the entertainment for the likes of British model/actress Elizabeth Hurley and funnyman David Walliams.
Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish will compete against soccer star David Beckham and singer Rod Stewart to be named Britain’s Dads of the Year.
Sir Elton and Furnish, who welcomed baby Zachary last Christmas (10) with the help of a surrogate mother, are the first gay couple to be shortlisted for the Premier Inn Celebrity Dad of the Year prize.
Australian singer Peter Andre, who took the title last year (10), has also been nominated, along with British pop star Gary Barlow.
A spokesperson for the contest says, “Peter Andre, the reigning champion, has once again made the shortlist so it will be interesting to see if he can become the first dad to win the title two years in a row.” The winner will be determined by public vote and announced on Britain’s Father’s Day next month (19Jun11).
Neil Patrick Harris got his dream ‘play date’ for his twins Harper and Gideon –Sir Elton John‘s new baby Zachary.
The How I Met Your Mother Star was one of the first celebrities to congratulate the Rocket Man and partner David Furnish on the arrival of the tot via a surrogate mother in December, and invited the couple to bring little Zachary to play with his newborn children with partner David Burtka.
And Harris got his wish – the legendary rocker arranged the date straight away, and the actor reveals he was impressed by the pair’s parenting skills.
He tells Access Hollywood, “Elton and David came to our house for Zachary’s first play date a couple (of) weeks back. They’re great guys. They’re super great parents. They’re so fiercely involved in their son’s life and it’s really kind of great to watch them interact with him.”
Harris and Burtka welcomed their kids by surrogate in October.
