Bruce Springsteen Recognized at Pre-Grammy Gala

Bruce Springsteen was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year as stars including Sir Elton John, Katy Perry and Sting paid tribute to “The Boss” before Sunday’s Grammy Awards.

The rocker was the toast of the event in Los Angeles, where top acts including Mumford & Sons, Patti Smith, Jackson Browne and Alabama Shakes took the stage to cover Springsteen’s greatest hits.

Sir Elton sang a rendition of his track Streets of Philadelphia, while John Legend put a jazz spin on Dancing In The Dark on the piano, and Tim McGraw belted outTougher than the Rest with Faith Hill singing harmony.

Funnyman Jon Stewart, the evening’s host, credited Springsteen with giving a good name to their home state of New Jersey.

He joked, “We don’t have much. We are known mostly as the chief exporter in this country of carcinogens. Bruce Springsteen is all we have.”

The dinner also featured an auction, which Springsteen contributed to by offering a signed Telecaster guitar – and he got into the giving spirit by adding a few bonuses to the package.

He told the crowd, “With this guitar comes one free guitar lesson from me. That’s right. One free lesson. One hour. And a ride in the sidecar of my Harley Davidson. So dig in!”

The instrument sold to an unidentified woman for $250,000, reports the New York Times.

Sir Elton John: ‘Donna Summer Should Have Been Inducted In Hall Of Fame’

Sir Elton John has lashed out at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame officials for failing to induct Donna Summer earlier this year (12), branding the snub a “total disgrace”.

The I Feel Love hitmaker was shortlisted for the honour as part of the class of 2012, but she was overlooked in favour of artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Beastie Boys and Guns N’ Roses – and the Rocket Man is angry his good friend Summer, who died on Thursday (17May12), was left out.

Paying tribute to the late star in a statement to, Elton says, “I’m so sad. This woman was the queen of disco and so much more. Her records sound as good today as they ever did.

“That she has never been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace, especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted. She is a great friend to me and to the Elton John Aids Foundation and I will miss her greatly.”

Meanwhile, a slew of other celebrities have added their tributes to Summer.

Barbra Streisand, who collaborated with the disco diva on their hit 1979 duet No More Tears (Enough Is Enough), writes, “I was shocked to hear about Donna. She was so vital the last time I saw her a few months ago. I loved doing the duet with her. She had an amazing voice and was so talented… It’s so sad.”

Elton John Says Royal Wedding "A Welcome Relief" from World’s Troubles

Sir Elton John is one of the many celebrities who’ll be attending the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton this Friday, April 29th.  While some have dismissed the nuptials as just an over-the-top spectacle, Elton sees the benefit in making a big deal out of the young couple’s big day.  On Good Morning America on Monday, April 25th, Elton told Barbara Walters, “Yeah, it is a fairytale thing, and people criticize it and say we’re making too much of it.  But it’s about love.  And in this day and age, anything that’s about love and and positivity is a welcome relief from what’s going on in the world.”
The last time Elton was in Westminster Abbey, the legendary cathedral where Will and Kate will say their vows, it was for the funeral of William’s mother, Princess Diana, who was a close friend of Elton’s.  He told Walters, “The last time we were [there]…my heart sank when I saw those two young boys walking behind the coffin. I thought that was the hardest thing…and [now], it’s a scene walking up the aisle with a beautiful woman and the love of his life…I’m sure Diana would be very, very happy about it.”
Elton is concerned, however, about all the press attention that Kate will get now that she’s a member of the royal family.  He warned, “The press are gonna give you a bumpy ride. They’re gonna love you, they’re gonna hate you,” adding, “I just hope they love each other to stay away from all that.”  In fact, Elton says that he’s ashamed at the “negativity” that pervades so much of the British press.  Elton himself has sued several British papers over the years for the things they’ve printed about him, and won several times.  He said on Good Morning America, “I’m sorry we have [that nastiness], but we do, and we have to live with it because it’s a great country.  But it’s one thing about Britain that sucks.”
By the way, Elton has only met Prince William twice.  He’s being invited more for his long association with the royal family than for any personal connection to the prince.  And let’s not forget, he is a knight.
