The Avengers Assemble Smash More Box Office Records

It seems that the more superheroes you have, the more likely you are to reap in the financial benefits, as The Avengers Assemble was released to American audiences yesterday (May 5th) to a huge reception. The superhero ensemble movie became the second-highest grossing movie on its opening day in the States, amassing a huge $91.1 million on the opening day, trailing only to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. According to a report by the Daily Mail, it will look to smash the record for highest weekend gross as it is expected to take in a whopping $169.2 million by the end of today. Should it reach this target then it will place the film above the two current highest weekend grosses, The Dark Knight and The Hunger Games.

The huge opening looks to be the start of what can only be a tremendously successful summer for Hollywood, as future smashes The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spiderman and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will look to capitalise on the success already started by The Avengers Assemble.

The film, directed by Joss Whedon, sees Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) take on the evil forces, led by Loki (Tom Hiddleston), as they attempt to take over Earth.
