Veteran book publisher/agent TONY SEIDL was on a fact finding trip to New York – searching for the next big thing in book publishing, when lightning struck at the airport newsstand. “I was standing there at the newsstand, looking at the magazines and it dawned on me … many of the usual magazines had been replaced with single-subject magazines, like on The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. I knew then that they were the future of the publishing business. Collectible magazines.”
With a lifetime of contacts in the business, Seidl has started up Event Bookazines, and their initial titles have generated quite a buzz within the industry. Their Supremes 50th Anniversary Celebration: My Supremes by Mary Wilson and noted writer Mark Bego was a major success. Bego is also penning Leonardo Di Caprio: A Close Up Profile for next month in tandem with the release of his Great Gatsby movie. The imprint is also releasing The Great Gatsby Era; The Lone Ranger & Other Cowboy Heroes; and Gettysburg as well.
It’s a heady time in the publishing business right now and Seidl has proven time and again his prowess in the field. “I helped pioneer the instant book … and, very clearly now, it’s the instant magazine. It’s a book, in a magazine format.”
